No scanners in hands and no turnstiles: a new format for ticket control

Today, Planeta Kino is an innovative cinema chain with IMAX, 4DX, and RE’LUX formats, over a million digital users, and a team that is constantly testing new ways to interact with its audience. Online ticket sales, electronic admission without paper tickets, a mobile app, and a streaming platform—all these solutions were developed in response to one simple question: how can we make the viewing experience even easier, faster, and more enjoyable?

The client's problem

Every day, cinema ticket inspectors have to check hundreds of tickets quickly and without errors. However, the existing methods—turnstiles or handheld scanners—do not provide the necessary mobility. At Planeta Kino, they wanted to completely free up the staff’s hands and speed up the verification process.

Key challenges:

  • ensure that controllers have complete freedom of movement while working;
  • use a compact and lightweight device that does not restrict movement;
  • provide instant access to all ticket information;
  • ensure stable operation even during peak loads;

We needed to find a non-standard approach to ticket scanning that would not only reduce the workload on staff, but also improve the audience experience before the start of the session.

How we solved the problem of scanning tickets at the cinema with an emphasis on speed and freedom of movement

  • We offered a non-standard solution at the intersection of mobile technologies and logistics experience.

  • Our approach:

  • To find the optimal solution, we held a series of sessions with the Planeta Kino team. One of our business analysts suggested adapting an approach that had previously worked in logistics projects: a Bluetooth finger scanner and a smartphone on the forearm. This completely freed up the controllers’ hands. The next step was to develop a software solution. The main challenge was the unstable performance of the SDK from the Chinese equipment supplier, which added about two weeks to the overall process. But this problem was also solved. As a result, the client received a hands-free scanner with complete information about the ticket, viewer data, and session occupancy.
