About the project

Intuitive and stable platform: Online shopping at VARUS is now easy, fast, and convenient.

The VARUS brand is one of the country's most important product chains, setting the standards for modern retail for over 20 years. The first supermarket opened in Dnipro in 2003. Today, the network comprises 110 stores, including to-go formats and a full-fledged dark store in Kyiv. Customers can find over 21,900 items in the chain. These are made available to shoppers by a team of 7,500 employees across 95,189 m² of retail space.

The client's problem

The request that the customer approached us with was ambitious. VARUS wanted to launch its own e-commerce project as quickly as possible. At the outset, it was clear that the company’s technological infrastructure was not yet ready for such a leap. It was fortunate that our specialists got involved at this stage and quickly helped the customer reach a new level of data processing and create a reliable foundation for the development of analytics, automation, and scalable digital solutions.

Critical obstacles that had to be overcome:

  • Outdated legacy systems did not support modern tools and did not allow for quick changes.
  • The complexity of integration made it impossible to set up a fully-fledged e-commerce environment.
  • Due to the low flexibility of the IT architecture, every adjustment required considerable resources and time.

It turned out that the company was in a situation where it was impossible to scale online sales due to the stark contrast with the capabilities of the existing technological infrastructure.

Case information

Case study on the transformation of the e-commerce landscape in retail: Introduction of an architecture designed for speed and scalability

  • Our team’s contribution to the development of VARUS: We have developed a catalog that is actively used in sales.

  • Our approach:

  • Work on this case began with meetings with the VARUS team. We identified the actual obstacles and developed a vision for the future e-commerce ecosystem. The biggest challenge was chaotic product content and dependence on outdated systems. For this reason, we introduced PIMCore as the sole platform responsible for the creation, structuring, and enrichment of product data.

  • The next important step was to build a logical and scalable product card structure, develop a multi-level catalog, and set up product imports from legacy systems. At the same time, we ensured stable export to the e-commerce platform using basic exchange mechanisms and GraphQL. The final stage was the preparation of detailed instructions and training for the VARUS team.

Work results:

  • All stages of our team’s work allowed us to fully launch PIMCore and a new e-commerce solution. They became the foundation for VARUS’ digital transformation.

  • Our successful steps in this case:

  • We created a comprehensive product catalog. It features a multi-level structure and product cards with enriched content.

  • We implemented integration with legacy systems, where mechanisms for importing data from internal systems were introduced.

  • We built a flexible and stable architecture that utilizes basic integration tools, including GraphQL.

  • This solution became the starting point for scaling e-commerce and building a modern digital ecosystem for the client company.
